Theater unter den Sternen am Cathedral Square
Productions of Waving World – People of Szöged, Rowdyworld, We Will Rock You, Shakespeare in love, Aida and Titanic will all premiere on Dóm Square in the coming season. You can also discover the stage in Újszeged’s Municipal park.
The Szeged Open-Air Festival’s new season starts with dance titeled Waving World. This co-production with the National Dance Ensemble plays triubute to the city of Szeged. The first part, People of Szöged, commemorates the events of the great flood that devastated the city 140 years ago, while Rowdyworld evokes the era of famed bandit Sándor Rózsa. It will be shown on 21 and 22 June.
A sensational Queen muscial, We Will Rock You is coming to the Szeged Open-Air Festival, with a total amount of 24 of the band’s hits played throughout the show, including unforgettable numbers like Radio Ga-Ga, Somebody To Love, Bohemian Rapsody, We Are The Champions and naturally the title song, We Will Rock You. The musical first premiered in Hungary last year, courtesy of PS Produkció, in a production directed by Cornelius Baltus, with set and costume designs from Kentaur, coreographies by Lajos Péter Túri and Hungarian lyrics by Tibor Miklós. This musical will unfold on the Szeged Open-Air Stage on 28,29,30 June and 5,6 July.
The Shakespeare series continues with a popular romantic comedy! Adapted from the film of the same title, which won seven Oscars, the stage play Shakespeare in Love invokes the figure of the giant dramatist while bringing to life the love story that inspired Romeo and Juliet. This guest performance on 12 and 13 June, directed by Madách Theatre is being directed by Tamás Szirtes, who is also credited with other successful Szeged Open-Air Festival productions like Cats and Mamma Mia!.
The importance of Aida extends beyond music history: Verdi’s marvellous opera also occupies an eminent spot in the history of Szeged Open-Air Festival, as the piece will be celebrating a special anniversary in 2019. It will have been exactly 80 years earlier, in 1939, when the work was first presented on Cathedral Square with the usual rich visual design and a cast of top performances singing in Hungarian. The audience can experience this historical opera on 26 and 27 July.
Everyone knows the story from more than a cetury ago which continues to excite our imaginations: the Szeged Open-Air Festival will be hosting the Hungarian premiere of the musical Titanic on 9,10,11 and 16,17,18 August. Acclaimed on Broadway, this show was nominated for five Tony awards and won all of them including the one for best musical. The Szeged Open-Air Festival’s own production is being staged by Szilárd Somogyi, who is responsible for other audience favourites like Gone with the Wind and Singin’ int he Rain.
In the 2019 season audience have the possibility to discover a completely renewed scene surrounded by shady paths and giant plane trees. The Újszeged Open-Air Stage again awaits lovers of summer theatrics with seating for 1200 and performances like The Threepenny Opera, Don Juan and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Coming to the Újszeged Open-Air Stage is another gem of a comedy from Molière: Don Juan. This classic story will bear the same hallmarks that have stamped all the previous pieces in the Molière series: the subtle – but never precious – humour and the author’s insight, which ensure that this comedy will never lose its relevance. This first show on the new Open-Air Stage will appear on 19,20 and 21 July.
Soaked through with humour and irony, Bertolt Brecht’s play with music The Threepenny Opera will be making it to the Újszeged Open-Air Stage for the first time on 2,3 and 4 August. This piece brought Brecht his first real breakthrough, and its popularity has never faded. Some of the tunes, such as Mack the Knife, which is also the name of the male protagonist, will be familiar to many viewers. Brecht’s most popular musical piece is being staged by Jászai Mari Award-winning László Bocsárdi, director of the Tamási Áron Theatre in the Transylvanian city of Sepsiszentgyörgy (Sfântu Gheorghe).
Visitors to the Opean-Air Festival have a true family experience waiting for them when Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs come to the Újszeged Stage, this time as a fairy-tale ballet. Tibor Kocsák and Gyula Harangozó’s Snow White is enormous popular wherever it plays – in Hungary or abroad. Its secret is to not just enchant the children with the well-known fairy tale, but also captivate adults with a story told with all the beauty of modern ballet. Considering the children’s presence, this family performance will begin at the Újszeged Stage an hour earlier than usual, at 8 pm. on 16,17,18 and 19 August.Megosztom
